Future Hyroponics

Hydroponics is a space-age science but yet it could be the light at the end of the tunnel for Third World countries suffering from prolonged famine and water scarcity. In areas such as sub-Saharan Africa, simple hydroponic system could help turn famine into a fighting chance for millions. Hence, hydroponics has great potential in providing intensive food production in limited areas or in areas having vast regions of non-arable land, such as deserts.

Hydroponics is a valuable means of growing fresh vegetables not only in countries having little arable land but also in smaller countries which have very little farm land in vegetable production. Typical examples of such regions are the West Indies and Hawaii. In such countries, tourist facilities have often taken over most arable areas of the country, forcing local agriculture out of existence.

Another area in which hydroponics might fill an important role is to help expedite reforestation. The high-yield potential of hydroponic growing system could potentially grow many more times plants in a given area.

More recently, research into providing fresh food for travelers and workers in space, along with the practical need to feed growing populations here on Earth in places where farmland has become scarce, has spurred a resurgence of interest in hydroponics. Through hydroponics, researchers develop soilless culture in space flights and food production systems for space exploration.

Hydroponics is the state of the art in agricultural technology. The future trend sees of using hydroponics for rooftop cultivation lends itself to moving food production systems closer to consumers while helping to preserve dwindling resources, especially land and water.
