Basics

Eclosion Cycle

  1. A day before the eclosion the colour and pattern of the adult wing begins to appear and can be seen through the pupal case.

  2. The movement of the butterfly causes the pupal case to split open behind the head and along the ventral surface. The butterfly crawl itself free from the pupal case, carefully drawing its antennae, legs and wings out.

  3. The wings of the newly emerged butterfly are small, soft, and crumpled, the butterfly either remains clinging to the pupal case or moves to a position close by and hang itself upside down.

  4. With the help of gravity, hemolymph (Butterfly Blood) is pumped from the body into the wings forcing them to unfold and expand to their full extent. When fully expanded the butterfly continue to hang for the wings to dry and harden.

  5. The duration of emergence (eclosion) varies and can take up to 2 hours. at the end of which the butterfly is ready to make it's first flight.
